On 9 March 1938, Franco decided to change the direction of his assault, advancing east across the Ebro river towards the Mediterranean coast. Again, the Bf 109s of 1. (under Hptm. Harro Harder) and 2. (OWt. Joachim Schlichting) J/88 and the He 51s of 3. J/88 under Galland and 4. J/88 under von Trutzschler-d'£lsa operated against ground targets. Based at Gallur, they helped the Nationalists to reach the town of Caspe on the Ebro on the 17th. The Bf 109's most successful days during this period came on 10 and 24 March when three Republican aircraft were shot down. But on 30 March, the He 51 piloted by Hptm. Hubertus Hering (who was to have succeeded Galland) collided with Lt. Manfred Michaelis over Alcarraz, resulting in the death of both pilots
